Taj Weekes: lead vocal, rhythm and acoustic guitar

Rastaman. Businessman. Preacher man. Island man. Poetry man. Reggae recording artist Taj Weekes plays many roles, but chief among them is the role of storyteller. The singer/songwriter tells tales of poverty, oppression, hopelessness and rejection, counterweighing them each with a message of Rastafari faith and spirituality. On his aptly-titled debut CD, Hope and Doubt, Taj sings about life’s tug of war the way only a man of experience can.

Born the youngest of ten children, Taj grew up on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. He became aware of the disparity between the well-heeled tourists and the striving locals early on. Religion and music were the two main salvations for the Weekes family, St. Lucians of Ethiopian descent, and the songs they learned at church often followed them home. “It was like a Caribbean Von Trapp family. Someone was always singing in some corner of the house or entertaining the rest of us, ” explains Weekes. While church music played a big role in Taj’s life, so did the sounds that emanated from his stereo—everything from The Mighty Sparrow to Paul Simon to Nat King Cole. Taj himself began singing by age five and started composing his own calypso music by the time he was eleven years old.

When his role model and older brother Desmond, nicknamed MPLA, discovered Rastafari, Taj quickly had his own spiritual awakening. Yet, by his late teens, Taj found the island’s 238 square miles too stifling and grew weary of its rigid dichotomies. He headed for the vast, opportunity-filled North America mainland to pursue a music career—first to Toronto and then to New York, where he found a home. Taj formed a band and named it Adowa, in tribute to his Ethiopian grandfather and to an 1896 battle in which Ethiopian Emperor Menelik II thwarted off Italian invaders, a milestone in Rastafari history.

Their brand of "classic roots reggae for the conscious mind" is mellow, positive and original. Their critically acclaimed album, HOPE & DOUBT has been receiving worldwide radio play and several stellar reviews on the internet and in print media. The group has developed a strong following in the United States, particularly in New England, having headlined the Vermont Roots Reggae Festival and participating in the Emergenza Festival. They will also be recording their second c.d to be released in the Spring of 2007 as well as launching an international tour in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The reggae band I perform and practice with, Jah New Jerusalem Band, opened for Taj and Adowa in Eureka twice this last week, and last night at the Red Fox Tavern. Well, I am now a big fan of Taj and his whole band they were so solid and powerful and carry the reggae music so well with serious, real stories in their crucial tunes. The band was so tight dem! Wow. Anyways it was wonderful kickin it with them and finding out more about their history, so check up on their music if you can, I believe they are on myspace. One love, stay strong.

What does Love mean?

Well, I'm in love with all of you, all of your experiences and choices as human beings, and that is in the sentience of all creations,

that is a one love, no ego involved, just that sweet peaceful feeling of warmth deep down in the soul. And that is of the essence of Jah the most High.

Consider that Rasta. From unconditional love we can make unconditional peace, free to experience all of creation in this lifetime without the dread, fear or inhibitants of physical and verbal violence. Love is not only for softies, it is the inspiration and strength of all positive kings and queens.

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8
year-olds, "What does love mean?"

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have
imagined. See what you think:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her
toenails anymore.
So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got
arthritis too. That's love."
Rebecca- age 8

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.
You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."
Billy - age 4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and
they go out and smell each other."
Karl - age 5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a
contest he was asked to judge.
The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.
The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly
gentleman who had recently lost his wife.
Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard,
climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.
When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,
"Nothing, I just helped him cry"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When there is nothing left but God, that is when we can clearly see that God is
all we need. God is love. "Love is all you need" - Beatles .

Take some time to say
this following prayer for the people in this world. Live that prayer in your daily actions. Manifest, you know.

_-_

Father, God bless all my friends in whatever it is that You know they may be
needing this day! And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity and
power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you. Amen.

_-_

Yes I :) Love you all, hope you are still reading!

Hello Xanga Friends -

Happy fourth of July - I forgot to celebrate it..whoops

I'm doing well, just had a pomegranate juice for 15 rupees (30 cents) haha.

new adventures...I have a new actress/model/hair stylist girlfriend from Bollywood, her name is Spundana shes very cool and beautiful. My new best friend is a rapper from Sudan, MC the Game. I get angry at the Indian bastards here, because I work as a DJ and they don't pay me, so we are very lucky we have not gotten into any fights, but sometimes we look and yell at them like we are going to kill them.

I have met many African people here in Hyderabad and they love my reggae singing. I love them also because reggae singers are very deeply connected with mama africa.

Also we have finally gotten a hold of some good weed to smoke, and I just finished a modeling job for an animation school. MC the Game got some money from his parents and I got paid from work, so we are no longer broke... for now. My ticket is waitlisted for the 21-28th of July, I'll check on that soon.

I miss California because many of the Indian people's culture is cheap and fucked up, especially in the cities. Many times, people act like our friends, but then they turn around behind our backs when we don't see them they try to cheat us and fuck us nicely. After 4 months of this, I don't want to be here so much and I lose hope in them. However, "I'm still here, wherever you go, wherever you come, I'm here " - from one of my songs.

Love you, always be cool,

peace and love,

Samuel J.

Dear People

Cheers!

hello!

just wrote to check in and wish you a very happy and positive week : )

Im in Mumbai, the economic capital of India. Im staying in Mumbai University and going to do some Servas home stays (www.servas.org). Its just like Los Angeles here in downtown! A professional, clean city, huge buildings, national natural parks, street dogs, Beautiful women everywhere, helpful educated Indian men all abound and culture from all over the world. Of course, the shit is there too, but in 4 months in India Ive learned quite a bit about how to find the positive show and abolish negative energies. When I tell people Ive been travelling in India for 4 months, they treat me with much more respect than when I first arrived. Its quite a life experience, thats for sure. Alot of it is simply timing and location.

I think about you a lot because you are my inspiration when things dont look so good. I think, my aunt Marilyn always believes in me. And Uncle Douglas told me, "You have life by tail, Sam, just hold on." Its so true! My first mate and best friend and bass player in my band, Chad Deal,  always keeps his cool and people love him, smiling and walking free in the world. So I do that too and it works so well.

The atmosphere here is so nice, I feel like I would like to stay for some more time! What to do? Haha. Well, I will get my ticket fixed up tommorow at the Korean Airlines office, or at least find out if I need to buy a new ticket or not, and then look for work in music, modeling and Bollywood to fill up the old bank account.

Ive since become an  amateaur (sp?) professional  DJ, in Goa (12 hours train ride 670km south of Mumbai on the coast of India). House parties, palace clubs, beach shacks... Haahaha. oh man. Even I have a meeting today with a DJ from Club Polyester to spin a set on WEdnesday night! Wow! But the reggae music is rocking the whole Indian subcontinent on a deeper level I think. They love it, and I love it and it flows freely these days through my voice and guitar. Even I have officially become a Rasta. Thats a whole other story, but I can summarize. A real rasta follows no specific religion or code or rules or groups, but figures out his/her own individual way. I believe in the power of God and seek to keep only with peace and love in my mind. I look forward to meeting you again, especially on the dance floor and in the garden!

Keep wishing me luck and love, Ill wish the same for you positive people.

HAHa. Im 21 now!

What to do? Peace and love, keep it easy. Tell the neighbours, Reji, all our mutual friends please, say hello for me. Tell them that I am actively becoming a much better person, capable of loving and living in multiple dimensions. A new DJ is coming back home soon with media and personnel connections from Russia, London, Goa, Canada, Mumbai, Project Tiger and Africa! Sweet Moses!

Namaste -

Samuel J.
